Diploma Programme (16-18)

As candidates for the IB Diploma Programme, students are required to select one subject from each of Groups 1-5 and a sixth subject, either from Group 6 or a second subject from Group 3 or 4. At least 3, and no more than 4, of the subjects, must be completed at Higher Level (HL).

Several other options may be available using Pamoja, a provider of online taught courses which is approved by the International Baccalaureate Organisation.  

The DP is made up of six subject groups with three components in the core as. Our school will offer a range of IB Diploma Programme courses within the following six subject groups:

• Studies in language and literature;
• Language acquisition;
• Individuals and societies;
• Sciences;
• Mathematics;
• The arts.

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, together with the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) are three additional academic requirements unique to the DP.

Students are expected to achieve certain score markers on their exams for receiving the IB Diploma. To be more specific, they must score 24 points or more between all their IB exams. Here are a few other requirements you need to fulfil to receive your diploma:  

• All CAS requirements must be met  
• There must be no grade “N” awarded for TOK, the Extended Essay, or a contributing subject 
• There must be no grade “E” awarded for TOK or the Extended Essay  
• There is no grade 1 at any level  
• Not more than two-grade 2s are awarded (SL or HL) 
• There are not more than three-grade 3s or below awarded 
• At least 12 points must be gained on HL subjects 
• At least 9 points must be gained on SL subjects  
• The student has not received any penalty for misconduct from the final award committee

The best thing about the  Diploma Programme is that it focuses on learning through inquiry and discovery. You will learn more about the “why” of things rather than the “what.”   

While the programme’s international perspective encourages students to become familiar with their culture and those of others, its balanced combination of various subjects is perfect for avoiding premature specialisation. The IB hands-on approach allows students to connect with the curriculum, rather than passively sit back and listen to a teacher’s lecture for the duration of a class.   

This Diploma Programme is ideal for you if you are intelligent, well-organized, hardworking, and aware in every sense of the word.  

No single factor is more important to a student’s success than the degree to which the student takes ownership for their learning. IB DP is building the tool kit the students need to transition from the teacher-dependent learning which is typically the norm in high schools to the independent learning that is essential in post-secondary education.   

The IB Diploma Programme is a rewarding and academically rigorous qualification so we do expect our students to work hard. However, your results are average or more than average, you can go a long way with this diploma. It is accessible to a wide range of students. If you have a willingness to persevere with a plethora of subjects, you are good to go.   

IB DP students have well-developed study habits, time management, test taking skills, note taking skills, memorising, strategic reading, collaborative learning and technological proficiency which they take with them to further their education and future careers. 

Yes. They certainly do. As the standing of the IB Diploma program is quite rigorous, universities tend to award advanced placement credits to International baccalaureate Diploma Programme graduates. Students scoring high grades are eligible for earning such university credits.  

 IB Diploma Programme focusses on more than a diploma, but rather, a diploma earned through comprehensive education — comprehensive in that it anticipates university-level expectations. IB DP students develop the necessary work ethic, responsibility and independence to tackle university, in comparison to standard high school students, who are not specifically encouraged to be independent, self-reliant learners.
