Early Years (ages 3-6)

Every child deserved the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children's earliest experiences of learning lay the foundations, not only for later learning in school, but also for their self-confidence and belief in themselves as learners for their whole lives.

The Early Years department at Amity International School Amsterdam caters for children between 3 and 6 years old. We support children to learn and develop through an inquiry and play-based curriculum, where children can explore and develop skills through a variety of learning experiences which help them make sense of the world around them. At Amity, this inquiry and play-based approach is underpinned by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme.

We know that young children thrive when they are interested, engaged and active in their own learning. We provide learning experiences that are meaningful, inclusive and multi-sensory, in order to provoke the students’ natural curiosity and interests through a number of engaging units of inquiry including:

  • Who we are
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organise ourselves
  • Sharing the planet
  • Where we are in place and time

As well as the learning of:

  • Language
  • Mathematics
  • Social studies
  • The Arts

The learning environments in the Early Years are well resourced and planned to ensure students learn through personal interest. We support the students in being responsible for their own learning and challenge them to become active world citizens through the IB learner profile.

Amity International School Amsterdam is a candidate school* for the PYP. This school is pursuing authorisation as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy- a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education- that we believe is important for our students.

* Only schools authorised by the IB Organisation can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted.

Early Years 1

In Early Years 1, children learn through hands-on experiences in a play-based, multi-sensory environment. We support their emotional and social well-being alongside their development, through exploring the world around us.

Early Years 2

In Early Years 2, we aim to support and reinforce a child's natural curiosity and wonder about the world and its inhabitants. Children will explore how we process and understand the world.

Early Years 3

In Early Years 3, students discover how our choices help us to build relationships and investigate their own unique characters. Our role in sharing the planet is explored, with students learning how to take care of living things such as plants and animals.
