Inspiring growth through sports: Physical development at Amity Amsterdam

Inspiring growth through sports: Physical development at Amity Amsterdam

We believe in nurturing the whole child—mind, body, and soul. Through our diverse range of sports and physical activities, or in, arts, music, or various academic clubs, at Amity International School Amsterdam, we encourage our students from Early Years to the Diploma Programme to explore their curiosity and enthusiasm to becoming confident and well-rounded individuals.

Why sports matter: building skills for life

Sports and physical activities are more than just fun—they’re transformative. Here are the key ways we see our students benefiting from staying active:

Boosting Mental Health

It's no secret that physical activity plays a crucial role in reducing stress and improving mental well-being. Through sports, our students find a positive outlet for their energy, promoting resilience, happiness, and self-confidence.

Fostering Social Connections

Team sports create a sense of belonging, encouraging collaboration, empathy, and communication. Our students not only build strong friendships but also learn to work together effectively—a skill that serves them well in all areas of life.

Enhancing Cognitive Skills and Academic Success

Staying active sharpens the mind! Sports improve concentration, memory, and time management, helping students tackle challenges both on and off the field. A healthy balance between academics and physical activity is the cornerstone of our holistic education approach.

Amity Amsterdam’s Wide Range of Physical & Sports Activities

Whether it’s through sports related Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) or structured lessons, we provide an exciting variety of sports that cater to every interest and ability. Here’s a glimpse into the opportunities we offer

A) Senior School

  • Football: Our first-ever football team, launched by DP students, has started each term with great enthusiasm! They are competing against other international schools, with matches in Amsterdam, Brussels and The Hague. They show that it’s not only about winning, it’s about teamwork, strategy, resilience and sportsmanship!
  • Basketball: Regular practices organised by our dedicated PE teacher have helped our students hone their agility, endurance, and communication skills. They’ve even started competing in matches, showcasing their growing talent. As they continue to develop, we see great potential for our team!
  • Volleyball: Volleyball is not a part of our CCA programme, but our Senior School PE teacher organises practices and matches. Through team-based gameplay, our Senior School students enhance their coordination, endurance, discipline, and collaboration. With each practice, they build confidence and strengthen their ability to work towards a common goal.
  • Table Tennis: This self-initiated activity has become a hit among our Senior School students. Beyond improving reflexes and precision, their passion has led to friendly competitions with other schools.

B) Primary School

  • Swimming: Swimming lessons are an integral part of our IB curriculum in Primary School. We believe it’s incredibly important that every student in our Primary School have the basic swimming skills. Our swimming programme develops the skills and confidence of our students, particularly our younger students or students who have moved over with little or no exposure to swimming before. They focus on swimming techniques and overall fitness levels, helping them build endurance and confidence.
  • Yoga: Our Early Years and Primary Years students participate in yoga lessons and CCAs termly. These sessions enhance mindfulness, flexibility, and emotional well-being. It’s a calming yet invigorating way to start or end their day.
  • Hockey: Available as a CCA for our Primary School students,  hockey teaches teamwork, agility, and strategic thinking—all while having fun!
  • Dance: Dance CCAs provide our Primary School students with an opportunity to expressing themselves through movement, our young dancers develop rhythm, coordination, and a love for the performing arts.

Sports as a way of life

Sports are more than an activity in our school; they’re a way of life. At Amity Amsterdam, we aim to inspire creativity, resilience, and perseverance in every student, helping them grow into confident individuals ready to take on life’s challenges. Through teamwork, discipline, and a commitment to healthy living, the children gain invaluable life skills that will guide them both now and in the future.
