Amity Amsterdam's Approach to Sustainability

Amity Amsterdam's Approach to Sustainability

At Amity Amsterdam, sustainability is embedded in our daily routines as a concept, an issue, a value, a practice, and a philosophy of how to be in the world. It is integral to our educational framework and shapes our culture, preparing us to build a better future. Our innovative approach to sustainability in the education framework exemplifies our profound commitment to integrating sustainable practices at every level.

Our Holistic Approach to Sustainability

We believe that sustainability goes beyond just passing on knowledge—it's about nurturing values and skills that empower our students and community members to make a positive impact on the world. With our holistic approach to sustainability, we aim to make a positive difference to our communities and the planet.

Our commitment can be seen in every aspect of our school. From our students’ and staff’s sustainability initiatives to exploring nature in our Forest School, practising mindfulness through yoga, CAS activities, and participating in fundraising efforts—every action contributes to our sustainability journey. We foster a mindset focused on long-term impacts and personal growth.

Thanks to the ongoing efforts of students, staff, and families, our school was invited to join as one of the five pioneer schools in the Erasmus+ Sustainability Accelerator Programme. A team of educators has since collaborated on leading various initiatives. Four of our Diploma Programme (DP) students, along with teachers involved in the Sustainability Personal Learning Community (PLC), represented us at the Sustainability Leadership Summit at the International School of Luxembourg, which served as a catalyst for other projects.

Examples of Our Sustainability Initiatives

Last year, through Amity’s Sustainability (PLC), our staff members implemented various impactful projects. Our gardening club brought together students and families to share knowledge about flowers, plants, and vegetables, with hands-on sessions teaching students how to plant and garden. One of the primary goals of this club is to incorporate the vegetables grown by our students into our school’s kitchen.

Our staff members have also made significant changes in school practices, such as reducing the use of gas and electricity, eliminating disposable cups, and using second-hand clothing for our school’s drama performances. They have promoted the Forest School and the use of Inner Development Goals

Inspired by the Erasmus+ Sustainability Accelerator Programme conference, our DP students established the Amity Sustainability Committee for the Whole School, showcasing their leadership and proactive spirit. They even welcomed Primary Years students to work in this committee with them. Some of the Amity Sustainability Committee’s actions include collaborating with our chefs to reduce food waste, working with the Operations Department to eliminate paper and plastic cups, and raising funds for charities in collaboration with the Community and Family Association.

Curriculum Integrating Holistic Sustainability

We seamlessly weave sustainability into the curriculum through innovative educational strategies. Instead of treating sustainability as a separate topic, we integrate these concepts across various subjects.

For instance, our Middle Years Programme (MYP) 2 students explore renewable energy technologies during their Science lessons. They focus on different energy sources like solar, wind, and hydropower, conducting hands-on experiments in the lab. Students analyse the environmental, economic, and social impacts of these technologies. By discussing real-world applications and design challenges, they gain a deeper understanding of renewable energy’s role in sustainable development.

In Economics lessons, our DP students explore the importance of a circular economy. They gain insights into how major corporations implement circular strategies to achieve a sustainable future. They analyse real-world examples and case studies, learning to appreciate the practical applications and global impact of a circular economy. This lesson also encourages them to think globally and embody the IB's learner profile attributes, such as being reflective, open-minded, and principled.

In the Early Years Programme, our students explore yoga and mindfulness that promote breathing exercises, physical movement, and focused attention. These sessions help students develop emotional regulation and overall well-being, teaching them to manage stress, improve mental health, and enhance concentration.

By integrating sustainability into our curriculum, we ensure that our students from ages 3 to 18 encounter sustainability from multiple perspectives, enhancing their understanding and engagement.

Shaping Future Leaders

At Amity Amsterdam, our commitment to sustainability in education shapes a generation of open-minded and responsible leaders. Our progressive approach equips students to tackle global challenges with knowledge and ethical responsibility. We listen to our students’ ideas and thoughts on how we can make the world more sustainable for their future. As we continue to innovate and inspire, we remain dedicated to making a long-lasting impact and encouraging others to join us in creating a sustainable future for all.
